Hello

Merry X'mas and Happy New Year !

Dear everyone,

Following is the last message of my 53-day South American adventure :

Since I have to wait for the start day of the trek, I have spent five days in Caracas, Capital City of Venesuela. This gives me the chance to better understand this city.

On 5 November, I joined the group consisting of 12 members from USA, New Zealand, UK & Hong Kong, and we took an early flight to Puerto Orden. From there we drove more than 12 hours to our first overnight stop.

The trip in Venesuela includes the 6-day return trek to the Roraima National Park which is a moderate trek at low altitude. Highest point is 2800m above sea level. We walked for around 6 to 7 hours each day. However, there is a fair amount of height gain. Additionally, we have to contend with humid & hot conditions, heavy showers, serveral river crossings and basic camping facilities & food due to limitation of carrying weight by porters. But as I see it, the most serious problem is insects attack. Two team members even have infections due to mosquito bites, hundreds of bites all over their legs and arms. We also have a couple of longish days driving, more than four internal flights ( small planes : 5-seater ; 6-seater : 8-seater ). In one occasion, we have three small planes for 12 team members, one guide and 12 bags. I and two team members with 10 bags occupied one 5 seater plane. The bags were stacked high in between me and the pilot. In order to prevent the bags falling down, I used my legs to support them. Luckily , the fly is rather stable. At that time, I feel like flying in a small motor car.

The two days river travel by motorised dugout canoe to the Angel Falls were wonderful and the views along the rivers ( with many water falls hanging in vertical cliffs of the table mountains & wild forests ) and the Angel Falls are gorgeous and spectacular. The water of the Angel Falls looks like pouring down through the cloud from the sky. This is the best views of water channel and water falls I have ever seen.

The final part is a two days at leisure in Los Roques Archipelago ( comprising around 50 islands, an unspoiled paradise, with quiet waters, lagoons, beaches of white coraline sand ). Main island is EI Gran Roque, the only inhabited island.

17 November is my 49th day in South America and it is also the last day of all activities. As usual, I woke up early at around 5am and took a walk around the island. But the sunrise was nothing particular. After breakfast, we took a boat ride to visit one of the many surrounding uninhabited islands, Crasqui. We have a full day on this long and narrow island, beach lazing, swimming and snorkelling. On arrival, most people went for swimming, lazing or snorkelling. But I chose to stroll along the long white sand ( approxamately 4 km ), enjoying the fantastic colours of blue sky, snow white cloud, jade green & deep blue calm waters. After lunch, I sat on the quiet beach admiring the white sandy shores surrounding curves of green & blue water and watching birds ( mostly pelican ) diving into the beautiful water for fishes. At this moment, it comes to my mind that five years ago, if I have not decided to take an early out of work, today is the last working day of my normal retirement at the 60th birthday. As such, I should be saying farewell to my dear colleaques who work with me for years. But now that I am here in Caribbean Sea, having a quiet & peaceful birthday. I would like to say that my decision is right. However, I miss my colleaques and work which I love.

For the past five years, I have done what I have dreamed for ( leisure life and to trek in unspoiled wilderness ). The remaining secondary trek destinations in my travelling list can be regarded as bonus for me. But I still wish to complete them in the years to come.

Traditionally, my family has low profile in birthday celebration. Normally, I will dinning out with my wife, sometimes with my daughter and son. Although I am happy and enjoy being alone to have my 60th birthday in the Caribbean island, I feel sad that my dear wife is not here with me.

Now, I am staying in a small hotel not far from the Caracas Airport. On 19 November, I will leave South America and is expected to arrive Hong Kong on 21 November, at around 8am.

With love from Venesuela,
CK

Dear CK,

Glad to know what's happening at your end.

We live as usual in HK: work, rest and work but it's a blessing already. I am so passive about enviornmental protection but it's a trend and everyone should put more effort.

I just viewed your photos last Satursday and was so impressed. France is totally differnet from what I've in mind. Besides Paris and the beautiful beaches, there are mountains. Mont Blanc is great.

You mentioned many unfamiliar places to me as I know they are the places that cannot be missed. Maybe next year I may travel with Kitty and you but of course, much shorter.

CK: what a nice surprise to find your message for me in the Bulletin! Many thanks for your kind wishes. Hope things turned out as scheduled for you. We shall have our gathering in your house this weekend. We shall miss you and hope to see you soon.

Hi everyone,

Global Warning : world-wide running out of fish, a very critical global
environmental issue. Nearly all wild fish stocks could
be wiped out by the middle of this century if current
consumption trends continue.

I am a big lover of ocean fish ( because I have little confidence in the fish supplied by fish farm ). It is one of my family's primary choice for meals on a daily basis. I consider fish is such a great food and also great for health. To me, I specially fond of small fish. For this reason, I normally go to fish market in early morning in hope to get different types of tiny fish. Based on my years experience, I totally agree with the warning. During the recent years, I find that the number of ocean fish are declining dramatically. Very often, I cannot see the fish in the market I use to buy.

What action is needed to tackle the crisis ?
Would you change your eating habits and willing to stop eating wild fish ?

For the sake of our lovely planet, I would definitely stop taking ocean fish. In fact, for years I have already stopped eating endangered fish, such as shark fin soup etc. However, most people don't very much care or pay very little attention to this issue. I think the warning represents the biggest environmental challenge. Because the whole eco chain in the oceans, rivers and lakes will be totally screwed, not to mention sea birds and other creatures like seals, sea lions, sharks, penquins, dolpins and other fish dependant animals.

Declining fish stocks are yet another example of our problem to manage the global environment and how serious and pressing the problem is becoming. Ban fishing in oceans, rivers and lakes is the only way. I think we are a selfish and greedy spcies on Earth. Apparantly, we consider money and economic are the only thing we are interested in over everything else.

The creatures on this Earth are not here for human beings consumption. We need balanced management on a global scale to stop the declining of wild life not only in the water. I would think that closing depleted fishing areas is a short term solution. It is just like closing the coal mines, sad, loss of works and business but absolutely necessary.

Hi everyone,

It took me nearly 24 hours from Lima, Peru via Santiago, Chile to Caracas, Venezuela ( from 9pm, 29/10 to 8:15pm, 30/10 ). Now, I stay in the Hotel Vila which is located at the foothills of Mt. Avila.

The Capital of Venezuela - the richest nation in the Latin America and one of the world's largest producers of oil - is a city full of people from all over the world. The City was founded in 1567 by a Spanish Conquistador. The land was discovered by Columbus on his third voyage in 1498. Venezuela is borded by the Caribean Sea to the north, Columbia to the southwest, Brazil to the southeast, and the Guayana to the east. In the southeast are the Guayana Highland, a vast and beautiful wilderness of giant sandstone plateaus that soar above the green jungle and cover almost half the country. The source of many rivers , the Guayana Shield regards as the oldest land formation on the face of the earth. Here, free-falling over half mile, are the Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world. This is the area I am going to trek and camp.

I really unable to praise this city which is untidy and looks rather confusions. Presumably, this country should have incredible wealth that comes from the oil venues. But as I see it the city developments are far from the required standard. I wolud like to ask where have all the money gone? I think the inhabitants must have acustomed to wrestling with the problems of traveling to and from their workplaces as we did in Hong Kong in the 1960's.

Caracas is a city similar to Hong Kong Island with over 6 million people. It ocupies a long, narrow, 9-mile green valley with a river flowing through the city to the sea. Covering about 45 square miles, the city just stands about 19 km south of the Caribean coast, with a forested mountains, the Mt. Avila ( 7380 feet about sea level at its peak ), separating it from the sea. The city's elevation of above 3000 feet gives it the place a good climate with an average yearly temperature of 25 degree centigrade. They have only two seasons, rainy season from May to December and the rest is dry season.

I was told that the poor comprises more than 60% of city's population. The oldest section of the city, contains most of the city's colonial buildings, historical monuments, musuems and old churches. But they have not been well preserved.

With best regards,
CK

Hi, Dear Friends,

Following is a summary of my second trek in Peru´s Andean Mountains. Hope you would like to read it :

On 16 October, our Team set off by car for the trek start point at the village of Cachora ( high above the Apurimac Canyon, south of Andean Peaks ), where we met our muleteer team. For the entire trip, we have trekked in the Apurimac Canyon, visited several Inca ruins, including the Choquequirao ( a deserted Inca city ), crossed deep valley of Rio Blanco, the San Juan Pass ( 3770m ), Rio Yanama Valley, the Choquetecarpo Pass ( 4615m ), the Valley of the Rio Colpa and the Canyon of the upper Vicabamba. On 24 October, at 2 pm, we finished the 9-day strenuous trekking & camping and finally stayed the night in a basic hostal in a small village located in the upper Vilcabamba River. On 25 October, we drove across a rocky, narrow & winding mountain road and a high pass ( 4185m ) to Ollañtaytambo ( a small Inca town not far from the famous Inca ruin, Machu Picchu ) and than return to Cusco on next day.

Our Group consists of 13 team members, 12 from UK. The Group was supported by one Australian leader and a full crew of camping staff and muleteers ( two trek guides, three cooks, 10 porters and 35 mules/horses ).

In total, this trek has covered over 150 km, with more than 5000 metres of ascent and descent. In fact, it was a lot of up and down hills and ridges in order to cross one deep valley to another valley. Basically, we trekked through the remote Vicabamba following Inca trails and crossed several high mountain passes, gorges and valleys. During the whole trip, we could not contact the outside world until back to civilization. I would say that this is a long, spectacular and strenuous trek and crossing the entire Vilcabamba mountain range from Apurimac to the Urubamba. This rugged region is considered one of Perus finest trekking destinations. Most of the days are long, walking up and down hills from 7 to 9 hours per day. Every day, we wake up early at 5 to 5:30am, normally leave camp site at around 7pm and arrive overnight stop at 4 to 6 pm respectively. During each day, we have about one hour hot lunch stop, one snack break and several short breaks.

Whilst trekking, there were a total of 9-night camping and I have hired a single tent which made my trekking life much more comfortable. When camping, a full service , including food and all equipment ( excluding sleeping bag and personal equipment ) is provided, eg., thermarest camping mattresse, dinning & kitchen tents and toilet tents with toilet papers. Meals ( breakfast, lunch and dinner ) are provided in a mixture of local and european style which are generally good. We only have to carry a daypack of around 30 litres. Other personal equipment kept in a trek bag are carried by the mules. A small snack pack containing biscuit, chocolate, nuts and a fresh fruit are also provided before leaving for the day walk.

Since the area we trekked is the highland area of the Cordillera Vilcabamba ( consists of inter-Andean valleys, canyons and gorges that are interspersed with mountain peaks and lakes ) , we have encountered different climates throughout the whole trip. Approxamately, 50% of the trek days were cloudy and raining. Above 3500m above sea level, the night-time temperature was around 5 to 10 degree centigrade, occasionally below zero. When we climbed up the high pass ( 4615m ), it was snowing.

During the trek, the only problem with me was the insect attack ( mainly mosquitos ). I believe that the insects are now free from any insect repellents. May be this is the reason that even I have repellent I still get bites everyday. As a result, I could not sleep well for most of the nights. However, I was fit to complete the trek.

After one day in Cusco ( 26/10 ), on 27 October I will fly to Lima ( capital city of Peru ) and then fly to Caracas ( capital city of Venezuela ) on 30 October, at 01:15am to start my last South America trek & camp in Angel Falls & Lost World.

CK
With best wishes from Ollantaytambo.

Hi Dear EHT Friends,

Recently, our EHT message facility has been continuously used in large quantity by people or organizations for promoting their products and other websites. Definitely, these are one of the many problems with the internet world. It certainly challenges the way and purpose we set up this information and idea exchange system. To fight against this immorality behaviour, we are now trying to do something to stop it. Personally, I strongly condemn these people in hope that they will eventually receive punishments in whatever forms.

Please find below my second South America trek information -

This trek covers some of Peru's finest trekking. This is a long, spectacular and strenuous hike and crosses the entire Vicabamba mountain range and some high pass Inca trails. In total, we will cover around 100 km with more than 5000 metres of ascent and descent, the lowest valley is at around 1450 metres above sea level and the highest pass is 4615 metres. This trek will end on 26 October at Cusco, the lovely ancient Inca Capital and Spanish Colonial city.

Since the area we trek is a rarely-visited site, our connection with the outside world would be stopped for almost 10 days.

With best regards from Cusco, Peru.
CK

Hello my dear friends,

I would like to share with you the following when I travel alone

A. What couldn't I travel without ?
Good books - Even I travel light and can buy anything I need wherever I go, but not for those places like Peru, because almost everything in spanish. To arrive somewhere without something I really want to read would be a disaster. Very often, I cannot buy a good book or magazine locally.
Music - without music I like is also a nightmare to me.

B. What is my most memorable journey ?
Trekking and camping in unspoiled wilderness, mountains and lakes.

C. Where have I felt most at home ?
Nowhere.

D. Where would I return to time after time ?
Unspoiled wilderness, mountains, lakes and peaceful places like French Polynesia, Easter Island, Galapagos etc.

E. Where would I never revisit ?
Cities, dirty, untidy and unsafe places.

F. Where haven't I been but dream of visiting ?
The summit of Mt. Everest and the moon where I can standing there looking at our lovely planet, the Earth.

G. What would I do not like most on travels alone ?
Someone who sits next to me, having abnormal perfume, snoring, from time to time sliding over me while sleeping and eating most of the time.
I have no choice but to share hotel room and tent with stranger.

H. Who would you like to travel with ?
My wife, children and friends with similar interest and dining habit.

Hi friends of hkeht,

First of all, I would like to wish you all good health and enjoying life as usual.

My first trek in South America :

After 9 days trekking and camping through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, foothills of Perus Cordillera Vilcalamba and finally to the fabulous Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, on 11/10 we took the train to Allantaytambo - a small Inca town - and then connecting a private car back to Cusco. And that is the end of my first trek. I will stay in Cusco - a very nice looking colonial and ancient Inca capital town - for the next few days and start the second trek on 15/10.

The reason I take this trek is simply because the Inca Trail is recognised to be one of the worlds great treks - walk the same trail the Inca walked since hundreds years ago and the chance to enjoy a natural scenery of beauty and archaeological Inca sites. I very much admire the building work of villages, temples and trails being set high on hilltops or mid-level of cliffs in the forests. During the trek, I also enjoyed seeing a lot of flowers - including over 20 kinds of orchid - and different types of trees and plants. The forests are wild and natural. Even on vertical bare cliffs, there are full of hanging flowers.

Our group consists of three members - a couple from UK and me - one leader, one cook and nine porters. During the trek, we have crossed three high passes - 4625m;3985m;4200m - camped at 3000m to 4300m above sea level and normally walked 5 to 7 hours a day. From the trekking metre of a team member, on the second last day we have walked up and down hills over 23000 steps. The trek takes us through lovely and unspoiled area with several Quechua Indian Villages and provides us with nice mountain views -from snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, cloud forests, orchids, hummingbirds, different kinds of birds and condors high above the sky. For the first few days, we have seen no other trekkers except us. For other people, the highlight of this trip is Machu Picchu - for me I have already visited this site with my wife about 20 years ago. Machu Picchu is unquestionably the most important archaeological site in South America and probably the most spectacular. I have a full day to climb up the two nearby Picchus to enjoy the amazing Machu Picchu in different angles.

During the trek, we have experienced four seasons, somtimes within a day. Since the area we trekked consists of inter-Andean valley, highland, canyons and gorges that are interspersed with mountain peaks, lakes, alphine pastures, the day temperatures are between 12 and 20 degrees centigrade. Above sea level 3500 metres, the night-time temperature was as low as minus 5 degrees centigrade. Very often, I have to put on socks, thermal underwear, warn hat, thermal gloves and sleep in the sleeping bag. But occasionally I still cannot sleep well.

On this trip, we have an English-speaking group leader and supported by a crew of camp staff and porters. The camping equipment and food on trek - a mixture of local and european style - are good.

In general, a day starts with an early morning brew and a bowl of hot washing water brought to our tent - I occupied one tent - at about 6:30 to 7:30 depending on each day schedule. During a hot breakfast - which including fresh fruit, porridge, pancakes or omelette, toast, jam and butter, plus hot drinks like coffe and tea, the tents will be struck down by the porters. At about 8 to 9am, we start walking at normal pace, enjoying the scenery and stopping to take pictures as we wish and taking a few minutes break in every hour. We usually walk for about 3 to 4 hours in the morning and have an hour lunch in a simple tent set up well in advance by the trek crew. The food normally includes fresh fruit, salad, bread, cheese, cold meats, jam, tea and coffe. The camp for the night usually set up by the trek crew before we arrive at camp site around 3 to 5 pm - which including tents for sleeping, kitchen, dinning and a seating toilet. A bowl of hot washing water will be provided before afternoon tea with snack. Dinner is a three course meal.

On the whole, I did enjoy the trek, but have to face problems in sleeping well, insect attack and going up and down hills on high altitude. So much to say about the trek, now it is time for me to stop. I would try to let you know the story of my next trek and hope you will not find it boring.

I miss you all and with all my love and best wishes from South America,
CK

Dear friends of HKEHT,

I feel very sad to hear a Brasilian plane missing when it was flying from Manus ( a small town right in the heart of the Amazon jungle, I have been there some 20 years ago ) to San Paulo. It was reported that the plane was perished and crashed in the Amazon jungle. All 155 people on board are considered to have little chance to survive. It is suspected that the jet may have been clipped with a smaller plane. To a certain extent, this fatal accident may impose negative influence on me while I am in South America.

On 29 September, at around 9:45am I left my dear wife, sweet home and Hong Kong for South America. After almost 30 hours ( including to and from airports, transit & flying time, plus nearly one hour for the Peru custom passport check ) , I finally checked in the hotel in Lima, Peru at 2:30am, 30/09.

On 30/09 morning, after a nice breakfast in the hotel restaurant, I took a taxi to the Musuem Gold of Peru which is famous for collections of gold artefacts from various pre-Colombian civilizations, some were more than 3000 years old and used by the Incas. later on, I also took another taxi to Plaza Mayor. Basically, I would prefer to walk but this is a city not safe to walk alone from one point to another point through some areas in which you may be robbed. Plaza Mayor was established by Pizarro ( an Spanish soldier ) on the day of Lima's foundation. The Plaza is considered the centre of city and is surrounded by most important and ancient buildings, such as Government Palace, the Cathedral, the City Hall and the Archbishop's Palace. The centre of the Plaza is decorated with a beautiful bronze 17th century fountain.

Tomorrow, 1st October I will take an early flight from Lima to Cusco ( leaving hotel for airport at 4am). Cusco is the capital city of ancient Inca Empire.
My first South American trek will commence on 3/10.

With all my best wishes to all of you from Lima.

Bonjour my dear friends,

On 6 September, I arrived in the Du Bois Hotel at about 16:15, together with a team member ( a young man from UK ) and the local trek guide ( other three group members did not complete the final day trek ). At that point in time, marked the end of our 10-day Mont Blanc circuit trek at the junction of three countries ( France;Italy;Switzerland ) and also all my European treks.

I enjoyed this circuit trek even thought there were quite a lot of up and down hills ( some of them are steep and rocky ) and each day walk was long ( ranged from 6 to 9 hours ). Furthermore, some overnight accommodations were in refuges ( in one occasion, 16 persons in one room, closely sleeping together ). However, the weather was perfectly fine except day one and the views were gorgeous and manificent. I think this is probably one of the best treks in the world.

Now that my five treks are over. On the whole, this long trip ( over two months ) is a fantastic journey. I am really happy and feeling grateful and thanks-giving that I have the opportunity to do that and finished safe and in good shape. Most importantly, I did enjoy being in the european wilderness and the beauty of the nature which I will remember as long as I live. Nevertheless, in my list of trekking goal, I still have a few destinations waiting for me and I wish to get it done whilst my legs and physical fitness are still in good condition. Frankly, I also hope that I can find partners to accomplish the trek goal with me. But I realize that it is not easy at all.

I miss you all and wish to see you soon. Please forgive my absence in the HKEHT activities.

Dear Doris,

Thanks for sharing your experience and feeling with me.

For this 69-day trip, I only have such experience when I was on my own.
During the recent 4 days in Chamonix valley, every morning after a nice breakfst at hotel, I left at around 09:30 to take a train or bus to the hiking start point. Normally, have a pinic lunch ( french bread, orange and chocolate ) and finished hike at about 17:00 for time to catch scheduled hourly train or bus back to the hotel. Taking off the heavy trek boots and have a good bath, later on, enjoyed the beauty of mountains just in front of the balcony. Not later than 20:00, have dinner at the hotel small but nice decorated restaurant.
Tomorrow ( 27/08 ), plan to go for another hike up to the mountain. On 28/08, will start the 10-day trek without shower, cloth washing, fine dining, overnight in 2 to 4 persons room provided by refuges.

Dear CK,

Humans are flexible. Though I cannot be your good hiking partner, I am still a reader of your hiking adventures. I love the experience of soaking in the harmony of nature and surrounded by mountains. After a day's trek, nothing is better than having a cup of hot coffee or chocolate and a hot shower, taking off the hiking boot, changing to dry clothes, having a good meal and a good sleep and what else. I'm sure all your hardship would be gone far far away when gorgeous sceneries are before you.

Hi everyone,

On 22 August, the fiftyth day of my Europe trip, I left Scandinavia and went to the southern region of France ( 3 flights : Kiruna-Stockholm, Stockholm-Zurich, Zurich-Geneva & by car from Geneva Airport/Switzerland to Chamonix/France.

From 23 to 27 August ( before the start of 10-day Mont Blanc trek at the junction of France, Italy and Switzerland ), I have five days to explore the beautiful Chamonix valley on my own. Now, I stay in the Hotel Du Bois which is situated in the pictureque village of the Les Houches beneath the glciated massif of Mont Blanc. This hotel has been designed in traditional style set against the magnificent backdrop of Mont Blanc range, small but comfortable. I have a room with a little balcony facing the snow capped mountains. Sunrise and sunset scene can be seen from the balcony.

In the Chamonix valley, there are two almost free transport services running from 7am to 8pm ( express train & bus ). Tourists will get a card costed one euro per day from the hotel. During the stay in the valley, tourists can have different choices of activities, such as skiing (winter) ; mountaineering, snowshoeing ; climbing ; cycling ; canyoning ; ice climbing ; walking ; hiking ; helicopter flight ; paragliding ; casino etc. For me, I just love to hike around in the valley and trails up on the mountains.

On 23 August, I spent a day for the famous Mont Blanc aerial trip to the AiguIlle du Midi and Hellronner. I have queued under hot sun over an hour to get a ticket and then wait for another hour to take the first cable car to the summit. For the whole day journey, people ( of course including me ) rushed in and out at each stop. However, our effort have a good reward, prefect weather ( bright & blue sky, gentle wind & not too cold ). The view over the Mont Blanc massif was panoramic and gorges. I would say that this is an extraodinary trip through the heart of Mont Blanc massif. The panoramic Mont Blanc gondola in half an hour crossed 5km separating Punta Helbronner ( Italy ) from the Aiguille du Midi ( France ) at 3842 metres above sea level. During the gondola ride, we can have a 360?panaromic view of the fantastic nature scenery under the blue sky. The Mont Blanc massif surrounded by a wild alphine environment is also another attraction. Fourteen peaks over 4000 metres above sea level (one snowy peak followed by another along with glaciers, and imposing granite towers ) are the backdrop to this mountain itinerary. I think , especially for those not a high mountain trekker, this is an experience not to miss, provided under fine weather.

In the evening, I have a fine dinning at the hotel restaurant ( grilled tuna steak ).

On 24 August, the weather was bad. The sun has gone, cloudy, occasionally heavy showers, windy & cold up on the mountains. Today, I also took a cable car and then connected a mountain train up to the Bionnassay glacier just below Mont Blanc, 4810 metres above sea level and walked along the path near the glacier. This is one of the set-off points to ascent summit of Mont Blanc.

Althought, I am alone I will take extreme care and watch out any dangers.

Best regards from Chamonix, France.

Hi everyone,

I have finished the 9-day trek in the north wilderness area of Sweden and now staying at the city of Kiruna. Kiruna is located in the Lapland within Swedens borders ( Norway/Finland ) and inside the Artic Circle, not very far from the North P闤e. Will stay in this small city for two and half days at leisure, restoring my energy for the next tough trek in the borders of France, Italy and Austria.

Here are some information for your interest :

Participant :
UK-2 ; USA-1 ; HK-1 ; local leader/guide-1, a group 鐪 5 ( 3 males & 2 females ), very likely I am the oldest gay.

Climate :
Day time from 10 to 26 degrees centigrade ; night time from 5 to 10 ; sometimes sunny/shower/cloudy/windy/cold within same day.

Kungsleden Trail :
The trail started in the 1890, a series of mountain huts developed overtime roughly one days walk away from each other and connected with marked path, total distance 425 km, highest point 1150m above sea level. Our group only covered approxmately 100km. The trail only opens to hikers from late June to early September, straightforward walking on well-defined path, some of the days long with the longest being 26 km. We have hiked on the sections of Swedens most popular and famous area ( during the trek seen many Swedish, some staying in tents, only fewer foreigners and reindeers ) which links together two Swedens remotest national parks, Abisko and Sarek, about 200 km north of the Artic Circle. These parks are also a famous skiing destination. One can carry a backpack skiing from one point to another point for a long period, over 100 km and more.

Kebnekaise :
The range covers around 500 square km, with 200 distinct peaks and small Glaciers. In the lowland and valleys, there are over 6000 terns, lakes and many small streams & rivers. The ascent of the highest peak ( 2105m, Swedens highest mountain ) is the longest and most strenuous day of the entire trek ( including a lunch stop and some short breaks for adjusting cloth and equipment ). Need to carry a climbing harness and a climbing helmet, roped together when crossing glaciers and on snow-slope sections, scrambling a 80 metres rocky cliff with the assistance and security of fixed wire for clipping into. This ascent is considered not suitable for high head people.

Accommodation :
We stayed in mountain stations ( 2 bed and 4 bed rooms with shared sitting area, shower and toilet within each block ; pillow and blanket provided ; a shop and restaurant ) and mountain huts ( 4, 6 & 9 bed rooms with a shared commual cooking and sitting area in each room ; pillow & blanket provided ; outdoor public toilet-no flush facility and a small shop ). Some people may not have a good sleep, in particular, if somebody snoring. For me, I used to get up early. So in order not to disturb other sleeping people, I normally stayed in bed, listening music or medication, ha ha ha not for me !

Food & Meal :
Whilst staying at huts, need to assist with preparing meals, washing, cleaning and getting water from the nearby rivers or terns ; huts have basic cooking facilities ; mainly processed and dehydrated food ; self-prepared lunch (sandwiches). Whilst staying at stations, meals are taken in the restaurant and lunch are packed from the breakfast table. Thanks god, no need to do the household works, more time for other things.

City of Kiruna :
Kiruna is right in the middle of the Lapland where the sami people live and a major iron ore mining area. Yesterday, I joined a local tour to one of the mines in the Kiruna. It is very interesting but at that point in time feeling very sad about the ongoing mining stradegical incidents in mainland China.
The iron ore mine in Kiruna is the worlds biggest underground mine. Ore is mined with remote-controlled machines and driverless trains deep beneath the surface. We traveled by bus ( 48 seats ) right down into the mountain and through the mine to the visiting area at 540 m level, where exhibits, film and multimedia presentations were taken place. Here, we can grasp the history of the mining and the mining process, iron, steel-making and transportion system from underground to the surface and then connected by trains to two ports. It takes about 24 hours to shift the mines from 1045 m to the surface, about a month to the buyers in Europe, such as Germany, definitely more than a month to China. At present, 775 to 1045 metres below surface level, iron ore is mined around-the-cl鐼k, all year round. The mining museum at 540 metres level relates 100-year history of this mine and how mining methods developed and improved over years. The mine company, LKAB now employs more than 3000 people, mainly working on the surface. I am very much impressed by their efforts in the protection of the mining workers, environment and the community just right on the top of the mine.

On the whole, the four treks I have done are not as hard and difficult as the treks in the Mui Li Snow Mountain, K2 Base Camp and the Ha Pa Snow Mountain. The treks in mainland China are always in my mind, especially the partners, Chan Hing Fat, Mrs.Chan, Ma Lap Chi and Dawn. I look forward to some day in the future that we can trek together again.

On 22 August, I will take a flight to Stockholm, connecting another flight to Geneva.

With warmest regards from Kiruna.

Hi everyone,

I am now at a mountain station which is my last stop for the Sweden trek. Tomorrow ( 18 August ), 8:15am will trek up to the summit of the highest mountain in Sweden, and return to the station before 7pm. This will be a long and tough day.

As scheduled, we will take a short walk to connect a bus back to Kiruna on 19 August, a small town in northern Sweden. I will stay there for two days and fly to Geneva, France for the last trek and back to Hong Kong on 10 September.

No phone, TV, newspaper etc for the Sweden trekking area.

With best regards from Sweden.

Dear HKEHT friends,

Wish you all have a nice boat trip on 18 August.

Update :
Typhoon Saomal hit China province, caused over 100 dead ;
Middle East Crisis, dead 785, wounded 4114.

Ho Chee Kong August 11, 2006, 4:37 pm
Hello everyone,

On 11 August, 2006 :

Typhoon Saomal hited China, more than 81 dead ;

31 days of Middle East Crisis, over 1000 dead ;

35 killed in Iraq ;

Terror plot to blow up aircrafts, results more restrictive airline passenger carrying rules. Air traffic in Britain and USA serious affected and chaos on ground.

Could all these tragedies and threats be prevented and vanished ???????

Yesterday, spent a whole day in the Stockholm City National Park and went to a classical music concert in the evening, having a relaxing & peaceful time.
On 12 August noon, I will fly to Kiruna - north of Sweden - to start my trek there. Since this is a domestic flight, I think it should not be any problem. And hopefully, on 9 September my flight from Geneva via Amsterdam to Hong Kong will not be affected.

With best regards from Stockholm

Dear Margaret and Will,

Thanks for taking your time out to visit our Hiking Team site. Definitely, you must encounter some difficulty because there is no Engish headings. Will send you the pictures before end of September.

Dear Doris,

The temperature was sometimes around -3 to 0 at night. Yes, we have a tight schedule, but not for me, since I always wake up at 5 to 6 early in the morning.
I used to take a walk to the nearby hilltops, enjoying the sunrise view of the wilderness. Normally, we have to pack all our things & gear including the sleeping tents before breakfast. Ater breakfast, the kitchen tent will be pulled down and packed. Since the area we trekked is absolutely wild, no man-made stuff and inhabitats, sorry no shower and laundary. All my clothes & socks had not been changed until returning to the civilization. This is only because to keep the backpack weight down to the minmum.

Stockholm is a nice city with respect to wandering about. During the past few days, we have a very lovely weather, blue sky with some cloud, gentle breeze throughout the day, 20-26 degree centigrade. There are a lot of cafes, bars and restaurants in the city vicinity and people love to seat outdoor and have a cup of coffe, a piece of cake or salad. Today, I visited the Drottningholm Palace and the City Hall.

With best regards from Stockholm.

I can imagine you have a busy schedule when the time you wake up and before you sleep. Loading/unloading your gears, cleaning and preparation for meals, queuing up to have shower or laundry, this all reminds me of my camping days in the USA and Northern Europe in 1988 and 1989.

Stockholm is a loving country with beautiful harbour and lots of ships. Did it rain a lot in the cities like Norway and Stockholm, I remember it rains almost everyday during summer time.

Bye now and write more.

Doris from HK

Ah King,

Thanks for your warm message. I would like to invite you, ah Chuen and friends of the HKEHT to my house for a cup of tea and sharing my adventure experience.

As a pre-trekking warm up exercise, yesterday I have toured the Stockholm on foot for more than 8 hours, of course in a leisure pace. I also went to a classical music performance ( mainly violin and brasso, only eight performers without any electronic sound system ) held in the Royal Palace. Today, I am going to a city national park and will also take a boat trip around the Stockholm canals, quite deep that big ships can sail in and out. The weather now is around 26 degree centigrade.

My journey is moving eastward, homeward bound !

With love from Sweden.

Ho San,

You are not alone, we are always with you share your experience in such beautiful countries. More fun more fun everyday! Bon Courage!

Hi,

I am now in Stockholm, Sweden ( 7 August at 10:24 am, sunny, six hours behind Hong Kong time ). While I was in Greenland and Iceland it is 10 hours & 8 hours different respectively, so I need sometime to regulate my sleeping time.

Will plan to take more walking around the city, one day cycling and joining one or two sightseeing tours to the countryside before the start of the trek five days later.

I miss you all and the delicious foods I love best in Hong Kong, such as steamed small sea fishes which are not farmed by human.

Kitty August 7, 2006, 1:14 pm
Dear CK,

I love reading your trek notes, anxious to know everything that you have been going through. Enjoy your trip and do take good care of yourself. I miss you.

Ho Chee Kong August 6, 2006, 8:12 pm
Hi everyone, how are you doing!

Dear Doris,
Thanks for your caring. Up to now, I am fine and having guite a lot of new experience. The only problem with me is loneliness, because most of the time alone. Books are my best companion.

Now, I am in Reykjavik, Iceland capital city and will fly to Stockholm, Sweden in the afternoon, for the next trek.

For the Greenland trek, it is truely a wild and natural adventure. Greenland is almost comletely covered by the worlds second largest icecap ( Antarctic is the largest ). Here, only in summer time ( approxamately three months ) we can see green in the valleys along the coastline, but treeless throughout the entire region. In the middle of the summer, the sun is visible for almost 24 hours, while at Christmas the days are very short and dark all the time. Because of the cold sea current running along the coast from Artic to the south, we can see many huge amounts of flowing iceberg around Greenland and deep into the fjords.

During our trek, we have encountered different climates except the warm summer. But now is the summer time of Greenland. Daytime temperature is normally below 10 degree centigrade, dropped to around freezing at night. It is only about 58000 people living along the east and south Greenland coasts, mostly Inuit ( Eskimos ) inhabitants. On 31 July, we flied to Kulusuk - a small village with a simple airstrip and a tiny building for chech-in and check-out. After repacking our gear, we took a boat trip through fjords choked by ice to our first camp beside Ammassalik Fjord, closed to the Arctic Circle. On the way, the fjords were full of gigantic flowing icebergs ( drifting down from Arctic ) and jagged granite peaks on both sides. I can say that this is an special trekking adventure in a remote corner of the world. The distances covered are not extreme, being 10 to 15 kgs walking each day, at low sea level. However, this is a backpacking trek and we have to carry all our gear, plus the share of the groups communal equipment like the kitchen & sleeping tents, cooking gear and foods. The weight of my ruckback is around 12 kgs which imposed a big challenge for me while walking, in particular under unfavourable climatic conditions trekking through rocky ridges and crossing glaciers. We also helped to prepare breakfast, dinner, set up & put down tents, clean up cooking gear and the camp ground. On the last day, we have the morning to explore the Kulusuk village ( dirty and untidy ) and after that we took a 2-hour flight back to Iceland.

I would let you know my next trekking adventure in Sweden later this month.

With all my best wishes from Scandinavia.

Doris August 1, 2006, 12:46 pm
Dear CK,

How\'s your trek today? Iceland is unfamiliar to me. Long to see your photos. Not everyone can afford the time, money and effort like you.

Do you have blue sky like in Tibet? Mountain weather varies a lot and take care.

Middle East Crisis :
May god ( if there is a god ) give the wisdom to the leaders and people to solve the long time conflicts.
Already dreamed for thousand years, an impossible dream !!!!!!!!!!!!

Congo Republic Free Election :
After 45 years civil wars, the people of this small African country have the right and freedom to select their leaders and in such the way to oversee the performance of their government.
As a Hong Kong citizen, should I have the same right and chance to free selection of a CE and all the members of the legislative council ?
Another impossible dream !!!!!!!!!!!!

Let us bless for the world will be getting better and better, especially human rights.

Hi everyone,

I just finished the Iceland trek which is considered the finest trek in Iceland. Our trek started out from the hot springs of Landmannalaugar and headed southwards across the Fijallback Nature Reserve, offering wonderful diverse trekking and well-equipped campingsites. This is renowned as one of the world\'s classic walks. I would say that there are few places on earth where we can encounter such diverse scenery in so short a space of time. During the trek, we have experienced great contrast in weather and landscape, from volcanoes, hot springs, glaciers to tortured lava & from strong wind, raining to hot sun. However, the temperature was around zero to 15 degree.

We have a group of 16 people, including a local trek leader ( also assisted in preparing breakfast and dinner with the driver of the vehicle support. The vehicle is responsible for carrying the camping & cooking equipment and food ) between campsites. The team members are mainly from USA, UK, and Hong Kong and they were divided into three groups for the clean up work after breakfast and dinner. In addition, we also helped to set up and dismantle two big tents for kitchen and dinning. Of course, we have to put up and put down our sleeping tents every day. I shared a tent with an British gentleman from UK. For the meals, overall it´s not bad but too salty, sweeten and oily.

During the treks in Norway and Iceland, I did not see any asian people. According to their records and knowledge, I may be the first asian people trekking in these areas.

Now that, I am staying in the capital town of Iceland, Reykjavik preparing for the next trek in Greenland on the coming Monday.

CK with love from Iceland

Hi everyone,

My footprints in Iceland :

17 July - Reykjavik ( capital city )
Watching beautiful sunset at midnight ( 11:30pm ) and sunrise ( 3 am), very unusual experience, due to long day light for me cannot sleep long, only about 5 to 6 hours per day.

18 July - Husavik ( small fishing village in north of Iceland )
Skjalfandi Bay, a natural haven for whales and birds, in particular the puffin.
A traditional boat trip out in the Bay, seen five humback whales, one blue whale ( now the largest animal on earth ) blowing and lifting tales & dolphins.

19 July - Grimsey Island ( Iceland most northern end, in the Arctic Circle )
Only 2km wide and 6km long, bare cliffs around island. Here in midsummer, the midnight sun dropping to the horizon but never out of sight.

Some facts about Iceland :

First populated in 9th century by settlers mainly from Norway, recorded discoverer is a viking sailor.

Weather - winter cold & long time dark, day light scarce, but more daylight in summer months with famous midnight sun.

High price of everything due to imported from other countries.

Population - approx. 300000.

No. of tourists 2005 - 356200.

Chinese living in Iceland - 598.

Language - Icelandic.

Republic of Iceland established in 1944, out of control from Denmark.

Dear Young,

Thanks for your invitation. The US Parks organize education commencing from the schools, normally free of charge. For example, they offer summer programs, 3 to 7 days per session for 10 students maximum each group. A leader is assigned to take the group into the wilderness, walking and lecturing.

As I will be very busy this year, I would like to ask my two partners to contact you.

Hi CK ,
Yes , totally agree. We do have a lot to learn from other national parks, especially those in the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Public education is the no.1 issue and the other is enacting and implementing new laws and regulations. Hong Kong is weak in both. Therefore, these are the areas we will be focusing on in the coming 1-2 years.
Will invite you and your team members to join one of our talks or conferences in the coming future. It woud be nice to meet and talk to friends with common interests. My contact no. is 9327-5880.

Dear Young,

Thanks for your response.

It is always our Team\'s objective to strike for the protection of environment and nature. During my trekkings in various National Parks such as Patagonia/ Yellowstone/Grand Teton/Norway Jotungheimen etc., I have deeply impressed by their efforts and the methods being used in preserving the wilderness. I think we can learn from their experience and developments.

Perhaps, we can meet and exchange views and ideas.

Hi CK,
Thanks for your support to the works of the Geoconservancy , a newly established sub division of the Geological Society of Hong Kong. The Geoconservancy\'s mission is \"to identify and promote the conservation of the valuable geological heritages of Hong Kong for the benefits of the people and their future generations.\"

We are carrying out a series of geoconservation projects at the moment and would like to arouse public interest in protecting our beautiful natural landscapes and rocks which are so precious in Hong Kong.

Thanks again for your support and will keep in touch.

Wish you have a wonderful and safe trekking in Norway.

Hi everyone,

I am now in Oslo after the completion of a 7-day trekking trip in the Central Norway which is almost entirely made up of mountains. This is a real mountain trip with significant amounts of ascent and descent on every day, walking from 8 to 12 hours per day. The trails are so natural ( without any damage to the nature as a whole ) with many sections being bare rocky and requiring scrambling. We have crossed a glacier ( 8km ) for four hours. Two team members were accidentally falling into crevasse. Forfunately, the whole Team were being hopped up with rope. We also climbed up to the summits of Norways highest ( 2469m ) and second highest ( 2464m ) peaks.

Throughout the trip, I have to carry my personal equipment ( nearly 10 kg ). For the whole trip, we have trekked in the Jotunheimen National Park which is considered the most impressive part in Norway. They call it the Land of Giants. Here, the landscape is dominated by many tarns, lakes, rivers waterfalls and valleys with sharp ridges, glaciers, high platlaux and steep peaks.

With good mountain refuges, it makes our trekking more enjoyable and much easier ( without the need to carry tent and sleeping bag ). During the first five days, the weather was not stable, sometimes very cold, windy and snowing. But I enjoyed the wilderness especially in the state of so natural, no inhabitats except the refuges for trekkers overnight stay. Now that, I have four days to get my legs to resume normal, preparing for the next trek in Iceland.

With best regards from Norway.

Hi everyone,

Ah King, thanks for your message. Don\'t worry, I will take extreme care all the time, because I am looking forward to going to the HKEHT\'s trips with you and the friends of Tsui Luk Team.

Now, I stay in a hotel adjacent to the Oslo Central Train Station which is right in the town centre. This is convenient for me to take public transport and sightseeing around. The day before, I used the City Cycle System to tour around the city. This is the easiest way ( provided you like and know how to cycling) to see the cultural and scenic points. By paying about HKD80, you can access to 75 bike stands around the city and more than 1000 bikes that can be borrowed for three hours at a time at different bike stands within a day. With a special electronic card rented for one day at the Tourist Information Centre, I can select and return bike in any stands within the city of Oslo. It\'s a lot of fun cycling around.

I also visited the Norway\'s most popular round trip which include the Bergen Railway, the Flam Railway, the Sognetfjord ( by ferry) and the steep Stalheimskleiva road. This trip is similar to the trip of Cheung Kong Three Gorges.

Tomorrow ( 8 July), I will be going to my first trekking trip in the Norway mountain area. This covers the most impressive part of the Jotunheimen which is called the \" Land of The Giants \". The landscape is dominated by rivers, lakes, waterfalls and valleys, with sharp ridges, glaciers and high peaks. During this trek, 4 out of the 9 days require to walk up and down from 7 to 9 hours each day. Hopefully, I can do that without much difficulty and the nature scene & weather are beautiful and fine. The trek will end on 16 July and I will be back to Oslo for one day rest, preparing for the next trek in the Iceland.

With love from Oslo, Norway.

Dear HKEHT Friends ( especially my dear trekking partners Dawn, Ma, Chan Hing Fat and Cheung Shu Fun),

I just finished the challenging Mt. Everest circuit trek in the heart of the Himalayan range. I will leave Lukla for Kathmadu on 17 May. For the past 15 days, it is really hard and tough for me to trek and overnight camping on the steep, remote and cold mountainsides, mostly at 4000 m above sea-level.

Generally, the trekking conditions are good, following good paths. Based on my previous trekking experience, I think this Everest trek route is the best and is condsidered the most popular trekking destination area in the trekkers world.

To me, this is the second time I trek in this area ( last time is 25 years ago with my beloved wife). Along the trail, there are quite a lot of newly set-up public kitchens and tea-houses with lodging facilities that make the trekking here much more comfortable and easier. But in fact some routes offer difficult trekking conditions, due to the high altitude and that some crosses are glaciated. The ascent of Gokyo Ri ( 5360 m ) and Kala Patar ( 5600 m ), passing ridges ( 4000 m - 5200 m ) and camping at sites from 3800 m to 5140 m present real hardship for people from low altitude.

However, I am lucky that the weather on the whole is fine, offering very stunning, manificient mountains, peaks and lakes views. We have also trekked up to the Everest Base Camp at 5364 m ( more than 28 international teams camped there for the summit ascent ).

This is a very worthwhile trip which I have looked froward for years. For sure, I will remember as long as I live. Hope that there is chance to share my fun, experience and hardship encountered with you in the near future.

I will be back to HK as scheduled on 20 May. Hoping that my last time hold-up experience at Lukla for three days due to unstable weather ( the 16-seater aero plane cannot fly) will not happen again this time.

CK, with love from Nepal.
